"Best pack I have ever owned" 2010-01-21
By Mark Moseley (Washington DC)
This pack is the best pack I have ever owned. It is very well built....far better than Targus or Swiss.

I travel on 4 planes per week and have gone through many packs, until I got this one.

Mobile Edge makes great products. I beg that you come out with a pack that can fit the Lenovo W700ds.

 "Happy Camper!" 2009-10-28
By Robert (Or-A-Gun, USofA)
I wish to thank Targus and Amazon. I went cheap and bought the Targus

TXL617 17 XL Back pack. It was about $18 dollars cheaper and I'm a

trying to save pennies (aren't we all?).

After traveling less than one week with the Targus, the flap clip broke

and had a problem with the main zipper (workmanship).

Amazon refunded the entire cost, so I order the Black premium.

Boy, am I glad.

The workman ship is a heck of a lot better!

The straps are a whole lot sturdier and WAY more comfortable. This is an

understatement!

Here's the rub, a friend has the same model Targus, but it was well over

a year old, they went cheap on the newer model and the workmanship has

changed for the worst. I based my original purchase on the older model

(with same model number) because of HIS experience and recommendation.

He also agreed, the newer version was lower quality and they removed

some cool features.

He's now eyeing the ScanFast Checkpoint Friendly Backpack, even though

his Targus is still in good shape (guilt maybe).

Never owned a Mobile Edge before, but the saying "you get what you pay

for" has hit me hard (in a good way).

The Premium also has better protection than the Targus.

I knew the Premium has more padding from reviews, but I thought it

would have a lot less space because of this. I'm darned stoked to be

proven wrong.

I can still fit a Pavilion DV7-2xxx (17.3") into a Caselogic PLS-17

Sleeve with the Power Supply/mouse into the padded backpack holder!

The HP DV7 is 16.2 x 10.9" and with added bulk of the sleeve, P/S &

Mouse in the zippered sleeve pocket, it fit like a glove. Tight enough

to not need the Velcro strap, but can still slide the lappy in and out

easy.

Thanks to Mobile Edge's competition, my investment in Premium Backpack

has made me a happy camper. It will also hold a whole bunch of tech

gear, and all the cables in one neat package.

I do not work for Mobile Edge or been fired by Targus.

"Sturdy, Ultimate zippers, Extra padding & protection... 17" Laptop" 2009-10-27
By Kelly Grant (Corpus Christi, TX)
This thing has more pockets than I can find stuff for. ie., I have a place for everything. It will fit my 17" HP d7 laptop. It has a strap that extends to fit the larger laptops to keep it secure. I have a friend that has a 18" laptop and it fit as-well. The sleeve that the laptop fits down into is extra padded for ultimate protection for your laptop. If you are looking for a backpack to fit both your laptop and some books this is the one for it. I have had my laptop in it and gone to Krispy Kreme donuts and purchased one of those half dozen boxes that the donuts lay flat in and slipped the box down inside the backpack and then zipped it all up and headed off to where I needed to go. When I got there and pulled the box of donuts out, the box was unbent. Donuts perfectly preserved. Of course the laptop being in its own little padded pouch was perfect. This thing has the room for laptop and books as I have tried that as well. It has a little place for pens as-well so they don't get lost. All in all this backpack has something for everyone.

I did have one problem with the zipper though. Two days after I received it the zipper got caught on the fabric lip and tore when I was trying to get it off the fabric. This is why I only gave it three stars. For those that buy this make sure that the fabric is out of the way before you zip it as the zippers are heavy duty zippers. Of course this could happen to any backpack manufacturer or brand backpack. I would let it deter you from buying this backpack.

If I ever need a laptop backpack again. I know to buy Mobile Edge...

Exactly what I wanted. I needed to get a good looking backpack that I could use for just about anything... Like being a student with a 15.4" notebook and 20 pounds of books. But I also use it for anything else, because the back padding makes it feel like you're carrying nothing.

This is, in my opinion, the coolest backpack ever.

"It more than does the job" 2008-09-30
By Michael Seviris
I purchased this backpack to carry around my HP Pavilion laptop and other portable electronics. It serves this purpose fairly well and is comfortable to wear around town. The construction is solid it is overall quite functional.

My only real gripe thus far is the fit of my laptop in the bag when I have a lot of items in it. The opening is rounded around the laptop sleeve which makes it difficult to fit the corners into when there's little slack. If you don't intend to fill the pack it will not be an issue.

"Professional, but not fully adjustable for wearer's height" 2009-06-20
By Professor R. (Illinois, USA)
I've had this model in black and pink leather for two years. It looks professional, holds a lot of stuff, cradles my 15" laptop nicely, and is durable. It still looks as good as the day I bought it. My chief criticism -- and the reason it's never become my everyday bag -- is that the shoulder straps won't adjust to be comfortable for a smaller adult. My friend and I -- 5'2" and 5'5" in height -- have the same complaint.

 "Ugly as sin" 2009-03-18
By Leslie Madsen-brooks
I ordered the two-toned backpack, thinking it would be in the pretty beige/gray depicted in the photo. Instead, it arrived in an ugly gunmetal gray with the company logo--ME--stamped all over it in black. It was hideous. The backpack looked very functional, but if you're buying this backpack in this color combo, I'd proceed with caution.

"Nice but big for a macbook 13 in." 2008-02-23
By Lori (Granger, IN)
I actually lucked out by finding this bag at Circuit City on clearance! I picked it up for 34 dollars. I had researched this bag on amazon first and by an odd stroke of luck found the bag at Circuit City on clearance the next day.

The two tone would not have been my first choice but I figured for 34 dollars it was worth it. I live in snowy, salty michigan so I was concerned the tweed fabric would get dirty easily. But so far any dirt or salt marks seem to wipe off with ease. I did not experience any bleeding when I was caught in the rain recently.

I load this bag up and its heavy when lifted by the handle but once placed on my back, it doesnt slow me down at all. Its a very comfortable bag.

The flap is a bit of a pain when getting to things in small spaces as its a stiff material and opens like a garage door. The buckle is nice looking but latches a bit odd. I like the fact that the laptop compartment is separate and not located under the flap. I guess my only real complaint is that my macbook 13 in. swims in the laptop compartment. Its really made for a larger computer. I get compliments on the bag all the time. Its pretty snazzy. ;)

"Not The Usual Sherpa bag" 2007-03-17
By CA reader
If you're after a somewhat professional-looking option for carrying your laptop and like the weight distribution only backpacks can give, there are precious few alternatives out there. The Mobile Edge is a definite contender for top spot and at $59, it can't be beat.

I spent a good deal of time trying to figure out if my laptop would fit in this bag before ordering. I had purchased a slightly less professional looking but more trim and much more compact bag from Ellington (called the multi-tasker vertical pack). The Ellington was top quality and very, very well made, but my computer was about 1 inch too long to fit even without my protective sleeve. So sadly, back it went. I loved that bag.

Mobile Edge says the Paris Backpack will fit a 15.4" laptop (just like the Ellington), however over the phone they stated a 17" would fit. As it turned out, I ended up finding the light-colored, two-toned bag at Circuit City ($79.99) while traveling in San Diego and was able to try it on for size. I found MY computer fit perfectly with maybe an inch left over. I have a Macbook Pro 15" which I keep in the Incase neoprene sleeve from Apple. The Macbook's outer dimensions are 14"W x 9 1/2"D and with the case, maybe an inch more. (Note: the "Wide" dimension becomes the "Long" when put into the backpack.) It's not at all necessary to keep your laptop in a sleeve like I do. The laptop compartment in the backpack is lined with soft, somewhat egg-crate like padding. It looks like it will give terrific protection to the laptop.

I finally decided the light colored fabric was a little odd looking. Definitely distinctive, but after a day of deliberation, I was too concerned it would pick up dirt too easily and the potential "bleed " problem indicated by another reviewer clinched it for me. Having a dressy-looking but filthy case would kind of defeat the purpose so I returned it. I also thought the light colored fabric would make it look larger than black would. However, if you like the look and think you'd be able to keep it clean, ignore this comment. I ended up returning mine to Circuit City in northern CA and the woman behind the counter exclaimed she had never seen one before and quickly spirited it off to the back. I'm pretty sure she nabbed it immediately for herself. As I said, if you want a dressy backpack, there are few to choose from. I ended up ordering the all black version on-line from an Amazon seller for $59 (new). I received it in a matter of days in sealed new condition and luckily have ended up preferring the black.

As far as quality goes, it's good, but not excellent. It's better than you'd find at Target, about on par with Marshall's, but nowhere near as well made as, say, Tumi or even Ellington. But it's nowhere near as expensive as Tumi would be if they even offered a product like this - which they don't. And though the price point is similar to Ellington (multi-tasker pack $89), it's MUCH more bag than the Ellington. With the zippered laptop compartment at the back AND two generous-sized zippered compartments underneath the flap that can take legal sized files one of which includes a zippered accessories pouch, the other which includes two zippered pockets and 3 velcro-flapped neoprene pockets, this bag can hold a LOT of stuff! Oh - and a cool little hidden zippered pocket at the side for a bottle of water. But it ends up bulkier than I'd prefer. I could have made-do with the more compact Ellington, but if you have a large laptop and carry a LOT of stuff, you'll appreciate the space in the Mobile Edge.

Both the light colored and the black body fabrics are a little unusual and would not be my first choice. The light colored is fuzzy and tweedy and the black is slippery with a sheen and almost dressy. Not your normal backpack, briefcase or suitcase materials. Not sure where you'd see the light colored fabric, but you might find the black fabric in small purses and evening bags. The hardware seems solid and hopefully, won't peel or chip. The bag has faux-leather parts which look to me like thin vinyl. It would be fine if these parts were confined to decorative trim, but Mobile Edge used this material for the gigantic front flap as well as all the points which take the greatest stress - and in many cases placed rivets (!) at these points to secure them. Since vinyl tends to tear, I would have preferred they used nylon webbing which they actually did use at the adjustable base part of the straps. My hope is they know what they're doing and the "vinyl" won't end up being a problem. I have taken pictures of the connections at the top of the straps and as soon as I figure out how to get them posted here, I'll put them up so you can judge this for yourself. The way they handled it was unexpected to me.

The bulk of the bag is a little more than necessary and if fully loaded, must weigh a ton. But the straps are curved, padded and the pack is well balanced and comfortable on the back. The very large front flap flops over and buckles at the lower front. One might be happy with this maybe for security reasons, but it tends to get in the way for me. The buckle isn't designed to be adjustable to the amount of stuff you actually pack so it can end up too loose or too tight and I find it a little awkward. The compartment for the laptop is at the back, behind where this flap attaches so handling the laptop is unaffected by it. I love this feature because there's nothing I hate more than going through airport security and having to completely upend everything just to get at my laptop. This way, all your stuff stays secured and untouched beneath the flap and fellow passengers can't see anything but the laptop and maybe a little of the dedicated laptop compartment. Great privacy, and since the laptop is secured not only by the zippered closure but also by a large, velcro strap beneath, you don't have to compromise laptop security, either.

Overall, I'm happy with the Mobile Edge. I'm encouraged a company recognizes the need for women to protect shoulders and backs by giving us the option of a backpack AND understands we might not always need to carry all our camping gear to work with our laptops. But I wish the execution were more tight. I like the "less is more" design motto and this bag doesn't follow that principle. It's a little too floppy and bulky and the materials and execution are not of the highest quality. On the other hand, it doesn't cost anywhere near $500 so in the end, I have to admit Mobile Edge did a very good job with the Paris Backpack. At $59, any criticism is really quibbling.

 "Great professional laptop backpack" 2009-08-07
By C. Silverstein (Nashville TN)
I have had this backpack over two years and it is still in great shape after accompanying me to work almost every day and on many flights. Professional looking for business environment. Well padded so it is comfortable to wear. Komen version adds a feminine touch and is a great way to support the breast cancer cause in a subtle way. Some have complained about the need to open the top flap to get to pockets that hold personal items, but I like the security of that design. Laptop slot that sits behind the front flap has double zipper which can hold a luggage lock for additional security.

"Lacks durability and is inconvenient" 2009-06-06
By D. Brudi
I have had my Mobile Edge backpack for almost two years now. I am just finishing law school, and needed a large bag to hold my laptop and a book or two. I also wanted something that wasn't unattractive. This back is big, and boxy, but is attractive enough that I have received a few compliments on it. However, that's about all. The straps on the back are attached with a weak material (seems like nylon covered in leather or some leather like material) and I am now just waiting for them to break. The zipper on the laptop compartment randomly refused to unzip, and is now not functioning. The area that zips at the top of the laptop compartment has no padding or protection, so if your bag falls over, the laptop could be easily damaged. The bag is huge on the outside, but never held more than my laptop and one book. I would assume something as large as this would hold more. Although there are quite a few interior compartments that I do like, you have to unbuckle the flap, unzip, and dig in. Nothing's easily accessible or convenient.

"Surprisingly large, but holds everything" 2008-06-13
By RN in 97 (Central Illinois)
I was surprised how large this was when I opened the box. However, I can fit my 15" laptop and several files inside. It has slots for your PDA or cell phone, and I carry my wallet in there as well. It is very comfortable to carry, too, and I have gotten multiple compliments. The only downside that I can see is having to open/close the flap each time you want your phone or PDA while traveling. I have taken to leaving it unclasped while I am stationary. The front flap is leather.

"good, big, versatile protective pack" 2009-02-10
By frozebubba (Alaska)
I travel in and out of Alaska all year, usually to places that are warmer. I needed a computer backpack that was easy to hang a jacket on once I got to warmer places. I got the Mobile Edge Premium (MEBPP1) to replace my "perfect" computer backpack (Targus Sport Deluxe Laptop Backpack (TSB312-315))when the zippers failed after ~4 years of hard use and I found it was no longer available. This pack is bigger (will hold everything for an overnight business trip easily), as noted by other users, and it will actually hold a Lenovo T61 plus an ASUS Eee PC 1000HD in a protective sleeve and all the extra gear without being stuffed. Substantial impact proctection in the computer sleeve; thinner fabric than my old Targus. Outside gear pocket very nice; big zippers that occasionally hang in the fabric. If you want to stuff a jacket under the top flap, this is the only way to go as far as I have found.

This bag is big. My new 17inch HP fits in it nicely as do about 5 or so normal sized library books and all the gear that goes with a laptop. A little on the pricey side (i picked mine up for $64 because there are others that will do the job for cheaper, but it's durable and seems to be put together in a quality way. Doesn't look like it's going to fall apart any time soon and it seems like a very secure way to carry my laptop around.
