"I LOVE Crumpler bags BUT....." 2009-08-14
By C. Marino (TN)
When I ordered this bag online I thought this would be the last camera bag I'd ever buy. Unfortunately I am going to put it on eBay and go with a Lowepro bag.

The reason for this is because although the bag is large, my camera (Canon 5D Mark II) doesn't even fit in it! The compartment for equipment is SO small and it's really awkward to get to. This bag is more for point and shoot cameras with a couple of extra batteries.

The upside is...it's a Crumpler! It's built really well and it does hold a laptop securely and well protected. If you don't have a "large" camera and a lot of accessories then this is definitely the bag for you!

"Well made but on the heavy side" 2009-04-12
By S. Fung (Daly City, CA United States)
The bag is well made with very good and sturdy material, which is also the down side of this bag. It's quite heavy. I used it to carry a Canon 20D and EF24-70mm lens. My shoulder and back are tired after a few hours of walk when I was traveling to Japan. Imagine I had to do the same for a few days. It was no fun.

"Best bag I could find" 2009-02-04
By Alastair Battson (Newton-Boston, MA. USA. from England originally)
Looked into a bag that would allow me to take my Nikon D80 and 3 lens aswell as my laptop and other bits on a flight as one. This suited the task perfectly. It is rather expensive but I liked the design and look so much I forked out for it any way. its very cool and different, although increasing less so as Crumpler gets popular. I got the khaki Orange one. It holds all I need it too and more. It is very well made too. I have no real quarms with it after 6 month. I have a couple of design improvements I can think of though. The tab/flap that holds the laptop in is way too long, I know its long for security but getting the laptop out at the airport is tough, especially if you have stuff in the compartment area infront of it. I also now wish it had the ability to either detach the laptop section when i arrive on vacation or that the camera area detached so i don't have to cart the big bag everywhere. Its is a barge like it says. But there is no bag like that on the market. So i still have to flatten my slingshot and cart that in the suitcase for just the camera on vacation. But overall a great bag. If your unsure also check out the Lowepro Fastpacks for better laptop access

 "Feeling "ripped-off"!" 2008-10-13
By K. Sebastian (Doha, Qatar)
I had really high expectations from this bag and from Crumpler. I still use a Crumpler Messenger bag purchased 3 years ago (from Aus.) and it's still as good as new.

Never thought twice before spending US $190 on this bag. Money was no issue and as I was very confident about the Crumpler design, quality and style. I couldn't locate a Crumpler store here in the Middle East so I decided to get it on Amazon. But it has turned out to be a major disappointment.

Within the first 5 mins of use, the black nylon strap separated from the padded part of the left shoulder strap. The stitching came off. The bag was nearly empty (just my Pentax SLR) and I had used it for approx 5 mins (1 min before getting into the car, and 4 mins after getting out and riding an elevator). The strap just failed (embarassing public moment). At first I refused to accept it, refused to believe. I thought it was just some buckle strap that must've come undone and could be put back easily. Slowly realisation dawned, the stitching had come off. No way I could repair it without some heavy duty sewing equipment. What was even more shocking was the other strap looked like it would come of easily (frayed stiches). Apalling! I would never in my dreams expect this even from a $10 bag. No Way.

Since I had this mailed to me overseas (shipped to my NY address and then spent a lot of money having it forwarded overseas to the middle east where I work). I cannot send it back without spending a lot of money. I could buy another bag for that amount. And that's exactly what I did. Just ordered a KATA DR-467 for $66.

I still can't figure out how Crumpler who sell products for about 400% the price of their competition could let a defective product slip through. All in all, I'm very disappointed.

BTW, this is a beautifully designed but poorly engineered product. Also, be warned that the bag itslef is huge and weighs a lot (approx 3Lbs??) Well, my laptop weighs less than that LOL! This bag will eat into your cabin luggage allowance. Since its huge you'd have to stuff into the overhead baggage compartment, thus risking damage to your delicate camera equipment.

 "Perfect Bag for Everything" 2008-06-05
By Amanda
I bought this camera for a trip to China last summer because I needed a bag to carry my DSLR, lenses and a laptop. It was the perfect travel bag for me. I used this as a carry-on, and while it is quite large, it made it for me.

I am also a college student, and this is a great bag for carrying everything I need for the day. This backpack has a ton of dividers, and they all velcro so you can rearrange and make it your own.

This is a sturdy bag, and I really like the straps and backing. When you are putting a DSLR, lenses, laptop, charger, batteries, and everything else for a trip, it gets heavy fast, and this was a great bag at distributing the weight. The back has firm but soft padding that helps the bag maintain its shape and it has a slot on the backing that is molded to your spine and makes it much more comfortable.

Overall, I would recommend this for anyone who needs a bag for a trip or a sturdy bag to hold ALL of their gear.

 "great carry on bag" 2009-01-03
By Lisa Pruitt (Spring, Texas USA)
I bought this bag as a carry-on. I wanted to be able to take my SLR on the plane as well as my laptop. I wanted a bag that would allow me to do both while protecting both. Alas, this bag. It did its job. I packed a widescreen HP Pavilion Entertainment laptop with power cord. I packed a little point and shoot digital camera. I packed a Canon Rebel digital SLR with two lenses. I packed misc. items like ipods, a book, a wallet, keys.... I rode on a regional jet. The backpack fit in the overhead compartment with no problems. I did not pack the back to full capacity. As it was I thought the bag was pretty weighty. For my own back's sake I would not have wanted to increase the load although the bag was not at capacity. The bag had no problems carrying this load. I felt condfident that the bag was constructed to carry this weight. After the trip, I did not find any signs of stress wear on the bag. All in all I am extremely happy with this purchase.

"Best Pack I have ever owned." 2008-12-12
By C. M. Miller (USA)
Although Pricy, this is hands down the best pack I have ever owned. With this I am able to carry my 17" Macbook Pro, cords, mouse, a notebook or two, my digital SLR, and 2 additional lenses. Remove the camera and I have enough room to carry a great deal of misc. items.

This pack is tough... the Nylon shell is the thickest I have seen, and although I haven't tried it in monsoon, it does shed water rather well in a light rain. It is comfortable to wear over one shoulder or both. The padding that interfaces with my back (also part of the padding surrounding the Mac) seems at least 1/2" inch thick. and is quite comfortable. As of yet I have not dropped the pack with the Mac inside... but I am confident that from less than a few feet it would be fine. Hopefully I will never need to test this hypothesis.

Overall its a great bag... it does what I need it to do. It looks good, but at the same time it does not yell "Im a Laptop bag, steal me!" Although this would be hard to do these days since I am rarely parted from it.....

"Crumpler? Exactly what I needed!" 2007-06-19
By Richard B. Graves (Sasebo, Japan)
I was in need of a bag to hold my MacbookPro and my Canon Digital Rebel XTi, and I needed one that was all black so I could wear it in uniform while serving in the Navy. This bag being a bit more stylish than normal camera bags/laptop bags didn't hurt either!

Pros:

This bag securely and safely holds my MBP, as well as my DSLR with a 17-85mm lens attached with room for two more lenses in the side pockets of the camera casing. The camera case is removeable from the front pocket holder (and reinsertable with it's two velcro strips), making more room in the bottom for other things if you're not bringing your camera along!

It also has a magazine/book slot in the main pocket, as well as extra room for things such as mouse, power adapters, clothes, etc...

There is an additional pocket in the very front that can hold smaller items such as cell phone, usb adapters, laptop cords, etc.

Some cons I can think of:

1. Crumplers website was a real turn off for me! - [...]-Crazy product names and descriptions! Made me wonder if this was a company I wanted to do business with.(especially after careful price considertion)

Expensive! (That's pretty self explanatory I think)

Colors are sometimes whacked out....I needed a plain black or blue color on the outside of the bag...but did I mention that the interior of the bag is a bright lime green color? I don't understand why they made it that color..it's not horrible it's just...strange!

All in all, I am very impressed with this bag and the quality of crumplers product.

"Good Bag - Tight on Space" 2009-01-19
By John P. Maher (Arlington, VA)
This is my second Crumpler bag and the quality is everything I expected. My only complaint is the space. From reading other reviews, I thought I would have enough room in this bag for my Canon 40D w/24-105 mounted plus another lens and flash. It barely fits. Don't expect to get anything more into the photo compartment.

"Not good to travel with or for day use" 2009-01-14
By Roshan Vyas
I bought this bag since I was traveling with a camera and laptop for a few months and wanted a non-dork looking bag. The bag looks good, but I found it lacking in everything else.

Here's the gear I was looking to carry:

-Apple MacBook Pro 15"

-Nikon D40

-Nikkor 18-55mm

-Nikkor 55-200mm

There are 3 zippered compartments: Let's say the one closest to your back when you're wearing it is Main, the middle one that holds your camera gear is the Middle, and farthest pocket is Mini.

The Main compartment has an area for your laptop and an area for some magazines/docs, both covered by a velcro flap. The rest of the room can be used for random crap, but the more you put in, the harder it is to open the velcro flap to get your laptop out.

The Middle compartment has a removable bucket to hold your camera gear. It also has a couple of netted pockets for random cables and cards. All of my gear fit in this area, but when the camera is in there...

The Mini pocket becomes completely stretched and unusable. You can't even put a pen in there. Anything stiff in there would bend as it's being pushed out by the Middle pocket.

All of the outside zippers are thick and feel secure, and are have fabric folded over them so they're hidden. This is great in crowds: I was traveling around crowded parts of Asia and never felt afraid that I wouldn't feel someone unzipping one of the pockets to steal something. But it sucks for daily use. There is just no way to open the bag fast, you have to take it off and fiddle with the zippers. I know it's a tradeoff, but make sure you understand that tradeoff before getting it.

For daily use with a laptop and no camera, the bag never felt bulky, but it did feel like overkill. For daily use with a camera and no laptop, it felt too big to be carrying around for a day trip.

The only times I liked using the bag were when I was packing to get on planes since it held all of my electronics. But once I landed, I had little use for the bag.

One last annoying thing to keep in mind if you're traveling a lot: There's no convenient place to hold travel docs and a cellphone that you need to access frequently, say at the airport and through security. It would have been nice to have an extra zippered pocket on the side to easily slide things into.

I ended up selling the bag after a few months. Let me know if you'd like to write anything else about the bag in the comments.

"excellent build quality, a little expensive" 2008-05-17
By Deen-Low (Los Angeles, CA)
I use this bag as a large day bag for short trips where I need to bring along other items outside of just my camera gear. I can store my Canon 40D w/ 24-105 f/4 L lens mounted, 14-70 f/4 L lens and 580EX II flash unit easily. In the top compartment goes a 14" laptop, light jacket, misc accessories, gorilla pod, snacks... all in all, the bag is well padded for my camera gear, but I don't like taking this bag into crowded areas due to the fact that the camera is situated in an easy access place where I can't protect my equipment. For trips into crowded, tourists areas, I tend to take the Crumpler Whickey and Cox backpack, where the zipper is in the backside of the bag and away from roaming hands reaching inside your camera bag.

 "Crumpler- Sinking barge" 2008-02-18
By J. Kamp (USA)
After careful investigation I chose the Crumpler Sinking Barge equipment backback. I like the quality and the ruggedness. I think that the outer layer should have more padding and that the "laptop" compartment is way too small. One feature that I truly appreciate is the camera compartment, it is easy to access. The backpack actually stands up pretty good too! I would recommend this backpack for basic equipment, but not for someone looking to carry alot of equipment. I can carry my EOS camera and flash, a light meter, 3 batteries and a charger comfortably. I can also SQUEEZE in another EOS camera but things get pretty tight. ** The laptop compartment works well for an external hard drive.

 "The best camera/laptop backpack" 2008-03-13
By Chris Hann (Alameda, CA United States)
This is a big pack. I wanted something for taking my camera, a few lenses, a laptop and all the chargers and extra cards that I might need on a flight to Europe. I didn't want to have to risk the $7,000 worth of gear I had to the hold and the baggage handlers.

One major design feature is that there are no 'obvious' external pockets. There are actually to zippered slash pockets that I use to stuff power cords, network cables, USB cables, modem cables and all that sort of thing in to. They don't take space from the inside. The main zip opens the back panel rather than the part of the back of the pack, in fact there's nothing anyone can get hold of or get in to when you are wearing the pack. All the zips are good quality and heavy weight. The material which forms the straps continues seamlessly in to the back panels, so they are very strong and there is no stitching to tear. Apparently a common method of stealing tourists gear is to grab their backpack and pull hard, the main zip then opens and you snatch whatever expensive goodies fall out. That won't work with the Crumpler, you may get pulled over but nothing is coming open even if they can find a handhold.

While the pack appears to be soft it actually has a fairly rigid foam lining. This servers the dual purposes of protecting the contents and providing a semi rigid shape. Even when the bag is full of gear and weighs 40lbs it is the same shape as when empty, at least so far as I can tell.

So, opening the pack reveals two parts. One is the laptop insert which is a well made and detachable nylon sleeve. The other is the removable insert for your camera gear. The camera insert has partitions which can be arranged to given open and closed top compartments as well as a small zippered gear bag at the top. Both the small internal bag and the whole insert have zippered mesh covers. The small bag, the whole camera insert and the laptop case can all be separately removed by ripping open some velcro. In practical terms this is very secure, nothing moves when you don't want it to. If you want to leave the cameras and take the laptop just rip out the insert and you can use the rest as a regular pack. If you want to leave the laptop you can remove its case, it looks very complete on its own, closes very securely with a big velcro patch and doesn't leave fasteners flapping around inside or on the sleeve.

I use the small internal bag to secure cleaning gear, spare batteries, memory cards, pens, keys and whatever other small items might be hard to find. I keep a Canon 24-105L lens on one side and a Canon 50 f1.8 and a Metz 54 flash on the other. In the middle I have my Canon EOS40d and a Sigma 80-400 lens. In other pockets I have the various filters, mains and mobile battery chargers, an external hard drive, card reader, radar detector, GPS receiver, VX5R radio, iPod and headphones as well as their various mounting brackets. I also carry a good sized IBM laptop with a 15.4" screen in the laptop sleeve.

All in all that's enough to make it uncomfortable to haul around for long, even on my 6'3" frame. Despite always having it packed solid and taking it on many road and air trips, thousands of miles of driving and tens of thousands in the air, it has never allowed anything inside to be damaged.

If I needed a big laptop/camera bag tomorrow this is what I would buy. I have not seen another brand that is anything like the quality and security of the Crumpler.

"Great Looks, Fantastic Build Quality and Some Good Features but Expensive" 2009-03-14
By Paul (SF Bay Area, CA)
At half the price the Crumpler The Beer Back would easily get 5 stars. But at the price I paid for it ($170) it's tough to overlook some of the minor problems. First the good:

- Fantastic build quantity

- Beautiful streamlined designed

- Cavernous interior. Easily fits a 17" laptop and a lot more stuff

- Innovative laptop 'sleeve' that can be removed and used on it's own

- Two massive exterior pockets that are so deep that there's no fear of stuff falling out if you don't close them

There's also something that's hard to quantify or express about Crumpler products. They may not be the best and they often have shortcomings but they just make you feel good about owning and using them. Kinda like Apple!

Now the bad:

- Padded back straps seem to be a bit long. I'm 6' and I've got to yank them almost as tight as I can to get the pack to sit comfortably.

- The outside pockets are so deep that it's tough to get anything out of them. It's almost like digging through the pack itself.

So depending on what your expectations are and whether you use your pack as a purse to organize everything while you're on the go you'll either love it or hate.

If you are looking for a pack with a dozen small pockets all over the place then this is not the pack for you.

If you're looking for a pack with great comfort and ergonomics then this is not for you.

If you need a well-built, great-looking pack, with lots of storage that fits a 17" laptop AND you're willing to pay almost twice the price of the competition then go for it.

"Doesn't live up to its hype on size" 2009-06-27
By Brian Olah (Atlanta, GA)
I bought this bag to consolidate my computer backpack and my camera bag. I travel a lot and have used several different brands. This bag seemed to promise huge protected space for my camera gear and laptop. Unfortunately it doesn't do it well enough to become much more than a nice looking storage bag. I would never try to go though security with this bag.

My 15.4 inch laptop had to be forced into the laptop sleeve and the screen hinges were noticeably looser after the first 8 hour trip.

The main compartment uses Velcro dividers/sections to creatively store your camera equipment. These dividers are all movable/adjustable and you have to decide the best design for your equipment. The main compartment becomes very tight once you place the dividers. Once you get all the stuff safely in, and decide you need a part you have to remove half your contents and dividers to get to it. Also you have no space for your laptops power brick and any of the accessories. If airport security riffles though the packed main compartment you would have to completely rebuild the storage. This would allow everyone going though security to view your gear as you rebuild your bag on one of the provided metal tables.

The front pockets are useless as they are so tight you can't put your hands or fingers down to the bottom and still see in to find small items. If you flip it down half the items are propelled out. The CF memory pocket will only open wide enough to get to the top middle four slots.

I ordered it while I was deployed and had it shipped to my home. By the time I got home I had missed the return window. If I had the chance I would have returned it and I will avoid crumple bags in the future.

"Great bag, hard to setup" 2008-12-28
By Samuel Wilson (Tokyo Japan)
I ordered this bag, because i needed a large, shoulder strewn bag, non backpack in other words, and this was recommended by all the guys i shoot with. Upon receipt of the bag i was thoroughly impressed by the amount of options the dividers allowed. I did however wish there were two more large separators such as the one in the middle, instead there were shorter ones. I constantly carry 6-8 lenses with me, and a 40d body, and a flash. I am still trying to get everything to fit in perfectly, and its proving to be a bit of a hassle. If i had a few less lenses, it would be better, but with my load its not that great considering i have lens hoods for 3 of them (70-200L and 100macro, 10-22) and they are not small at all.

overall though i really like the bag, tons of room, just have to figure out how to store it all appropriately.

"Wrong bag! Not ergonomically sound to carry any more" 2008-09-12
By Judge J Drhedd
I borrowed one from a friend. I got excited, put in my 17" latitude, and brought all the camera gears that can fit. After a few hours of lugging, my shoulder ached... felt tender for one week.

If you plan to take so much gear (telephoto+laptop+dslr with battery pack), better consider the backpack option. I tell you, it's awkward when you walk skewed just to favor the weight; and the bulk at your side is not ideal any more.

Crumpler shouldnt have made this model.

(It rained while Im carrying it though, and the extra cover is effective!)

 "Big outside, Tiny inside." 2008-07-05
By But I'm feeling much better now... (Chicago, IL United States)
I've been using this bag for about 6 weeks now, both walking around the city and taking it on a photo trip. I bought it as it seemed to be the only bag that met carry-on restrictions, would fit most of my equipment, and make it easy to access 2 cameras with different lenses on them instead of swapping lenses all of the time.

The only problem with that is the bag is incredibly small on the inside when compared to what it looks like from the outside. There are several areas where the designers got it almost right, but no cigar.

The main camera compartment will not take my 2 bodies with lenses attached. For one thing the viewfinders stick either into the laptop compartment or out towards the outside of the bag, which in turn does not let the top of the camera compartment close properly, which means the main outside flap does not close well. You can even see in the product pictures that one of the cameras has its viewfinder bulging out. This area measures 13"W X 5"D X 11"H, about 715 sq. in. I took off for the rounded corners which only make the curved space unusable. In comparison, my Lowepro Slingshot 200 has 624 sq. in. in its main compartment, and its all accessible, as well as the bag being $200 cheaper. My Pacsafe duffel with the photographic insert, which I would not carry around but it's good for transport, is less imposing than the Crumpler, but has a whopping 1760 sq.in. of space, all of it usable as it loads from the top.

If you `stack' your equipment as they suggest, you'll find yourself taking everything out of the bag, and removing all of the dividers to get at the bottom. Then of course you need to put everything back, and the dividers are a pain as they stick like glue to anything. I bought a new lens and that with the body attached is 13" long, the bag is 11" deep, doesn't fit. Speaking of dividers, they are a puzzle to figure out, I never have. The bag comes with a complete extra set, I assume for a second camera. This would all be easier if Crumpler supplied some diagrams for different configurations.

So, what I do is put the tripod (Gitzo traveler fits without the head on) on the bottom of the inside, put a layer of dividers in, then put the camera in across instead of vertically. I can at least carry my tripod and camera with long lens somewhat stealthily but nothing else will fit in the bag. Not even a tiny lens.

Putting anything in the top area (shown with the mesh) causes the flap to not fit square, and the handle will no longer be at the top but at an angle. Nothing will fit in the back pocket, I had to force an Elastolite reflector in there with the rain cover. The tripod holder is on the bottom, which might be OK for a backpack, but whenever you set this thing down it falls over. I tried putting my tripod on the front, but then when you open the case it falls to the grund if you're not careful. Supposedly it holds 18 CF cards, I could get only 4 in, the pockets are too small for any more unless you take them out of their cases, no thanks. The bright safety orange interior is great - except that when you close the bag, the side flaps stick out, acting like a beacon to potential thieves that something good is inside.

I don't know how they made that video, although I save seen a magician pull rabbits out of his hat. I do know that their pictures are all of an open bag, as it would be miracle if you could close it, and if you did it would look bloated like a pig.

The quality is great, hence the 2 stars, but I'm really disappointed that I had to carry an extra camera bag on the plane because my equipment wouldn't fit in this bag, not even close. I'm even more disappointed that I can't walk around with 2 cameras ready to go like it shows in all of the pictures.

i should have returned it when I had a chance, but I was on a deadline and frankly tired of shopping for a bag. Do yourself a favor and go to a store and look at this bag, take your equipment along and see if it fits before you buy it.

"giant messenger style camera bag" 2008-05-18
By Deen-Low (Los Angeles, CA)
I don't own this bag, but I know someone who does and have borrowed it a few times for my travels. It is a huge camera bag, capable of carrying enough equipment for just about any hobbyist, enthusiast or professional photographer. The versatility of the straps allow for various ways of carrying the bag and the padded straps make a heavy bag pretty easy to deal with. If you have steep pockets & lots of camera equipment to tote around, this is a great bag.
