 "The best camera/laptop backpack" 2008-03-13

This is a big pack. I wanted something for taking my camera, a few lenses, a laptop and all the chargers and extra cards that I might need on a flight to Europe. I didn't want to have to risk the $7,000 worth of gear I had to the hold and the baggage handlers.



One major design feature is that there are no 'obvious' external pockets. There are actually to zippered slash pockets that I use to stuff power cords, network cables, USB cables, modem cables and all that sort of thing in to. They don't take space from the inside. The main zip opens the back panel rather than the part of the back of the pack, in fact there's nothing anyone can get hold of or get in to when you are wearing the pack. All the zips are good quality and heavy weight. The material which forms the straps continues seamlessly in to the back panels, so they are very strong and there is no stitching to tear. Apparently a common method of stealing tourists gear is to grab their backpack and pull hard, the main zip then opens and you snatch whatever expensive goodies fall out. That won't work with the Crumpler, you may get pulled over but nothing is coming open even if they can find a handhold.



While the pack appears to be soft it actually has a fairly rigid foam lining. This servers the dual purposes of protecting the contents and providing a semi rigid shape. Even when the bag is full of gear and weighs 40lbs it is the same shape as when empty, at least so far as I can tell.



So, opening the pack reveals two parts. One is the laptop insert which is a well made and detachable nylon sleeve. The other is the removable insert for your camera gear. The camera insert has partitions which can be arranged to given open and closed top compartments as well as a small zippered gear bag at the top. Both the small internal bag and the whole insert have zippered mesh covers. The small bag, the whole camera insert and the laptop case can all be separately removed by ripping open some velcro. In practical terms this is very secure, nothing moves when you don't want it to. If you want to leave the cameras and take the laptop just rip out the insert and you can use the rest as a regular pack. If you want to leave the laptop you can remove its case, it looks very complete on its own, closes very securely with a big velcro patch and doesn't leave fasteners flapping around inside or on the sleeve.



I use the small internal bag to secure cleaning gear, spare batteries, memory cards, pens, keys and whatever other small items might be hard to find. I keep a Canon 24-105L lens on one side and a Canon 50 f1.8 and a Metz 54 flash on the other. In the middle I have my Canon EOS40d and a Sigma 80-400 lens. In other pockets I have the various filters, mains and mobile battery chargers, an external hard drive, card reader, radar detector, GPS receiver, VX5R radio, iPod and headphones as well as their various mounting brackets. I also carry a good sized IBM laptop with a 15.4" screen in the laptop sleeve.



All in all that's enough to make it uncomfortable to haul around for long, even on my 6'3" frame. Despite always having it packed solid and taking it on many road and air trips, thousands of miles of driving and tens of thousands in the air, it has never allowed anything inside to be damaged.



If I needed a big laptop/camera bag tomorrow this is what I would buy. I have not seen another brand that is anything like the quality and security of the Crumpler.

I got this for my frequent work traveling with a PC. I try to be a minimalist while traveling and this bag is perfect. Its very light and only has room for my laptop, a magazine or book, and mouse/power cords. If you're looking for something to schlep around a lot of books or stuff this is the wrong bag for you!

I got this for my laptop at a pretty decent price about a year ago. It was a little bit bigger than I thought it was going to be, but it's not bulky. It serves it's purpose of storing and carrying a laptop in a safe and relatively easy manner, as well as storing all of the necessary accessories for your laptop. Even then, I still have extra space left to fill with various items I may need.

I bought this because I absolute have to get away from traveling with humongous laptop purses and briefcases, as they're just too hard on my shoulder. This bag manages to be big enough for "lumpy things" (larger digital cameras, GPS's, fat wallets, books, etc.), with the usual assortment of big and small pockets--most internal, a good thing, plus two water-bottle holders. Yet the backpack manages not to look or feel too bulky, too casual, or too "collegiate." The design is nice enough I will use this for business trips without feeling self-conscious.



As for size, I am very short and the bag feels fine, not too long or wide; the well-padded shoulder straps hit my shoulder just right.



My laptop is very small, so it fits fine -- I can't speak to whether it really fits a 15.4" laptop, but it will sure haul my gear. I also really like that the 'puter pocket is a separate zipped compartment, with very thick padding.



I would take off half a star for the too-small cell phone holder on the front strap, except I plan to use it for my driver's license when I get to airports... I'll go find an accessory that accomplishes the same. It's very hard to complain at all about such a well-made product at this price. And the color is great, too!

I got this backpack after an adventure of trying to fit my laptop and assorted electronic gizmos into my laptop briefcase on a short airline trip. I had a sore shoulder and thought there has to be another solution besides bringing less stuff (which will never happen). This backpack is the perfect solution. My 15.4" widescreen laptop fits perfectly into the padded laptop zippered slot. The front area is large enough with many slots/pouches for all the assorted electronic gizmos and their assorted cords and accessories. There is plenty of room for books and other assorted school supplies as well. The front flap closes securely with two clasps and also has an outside zippered area to store stuff. There is a mesh holder on each side for bottled drinks. I got the green tea/parsley color which looks really cool with the orange interior color (these are two of my favorite colors). The best part of this backpack even if you stuff it will all the above mentioned it will not weigh you down. The padded straps are wide and allow the weight to be evenly distributed so there is less strain on your back and shoulders. I would highly recommend this backpack especially for students or travelers who are always on the go and carry their laptop everywhere and want something that can carry everything without weighing them down.

I really like this bag. It seems sturdy and protects my macbook quite well. It is also stylish and very comfortable. What I am little disappointed by is the space for books. I am a pharmacy school student and I can fit one book and one large binder in the back along with my macbook. I wish I could get another book in there but it is just too tight. Again, I like this bag alot but if I were to do it again, I might try a different one.

Even though my laptop doesn't fit in the provided slot, I still love this bag. I would agree that Speck products are more suited for Macs, and since I have a 17 inch Dell Studio, it's not even a tight squeeze- it's just not gonna happen. However, the padding in the entire bag is sufficient enough that I feel comfortable leaving my laptop in the main pocket, right in front of the laptop one. You can still fit something else in the laptop pocket at the same time, so it's really not a big issue. I also quite enjoy all the "secret" compartments such as the water bottle pocket that can be zipped away, the mp3 player slot, and other not so obvious places to store your stuff. The straps are very sturdy and comfortable, the zippers run smooth, and the fabric seems like it will hold up well. I wouldn't recommend it if you need to carry around tons o' stuff, but I'm using it for college and I think everything will fit fine. Overall a cool looking and nifty bag.

I was a little scared about the fit for my laptop after reading another review about it not fitting a 17" Hp laptop. I made the purchase and I must say this bag is great. My laptop fits perfectly and can be removed with no issue. I would not recommend using it for a 17" laptop, unless it is an apple laptop.



The secret back door compartment on this bag is great. I can finally remove my laptop without actually opening up the whole bag. You simply just unzip the back support (back cushion) and remove it, or place it back.



I highly recommend this bag to anyone if you are searching for a quality bag and great support for your laptop.



Just for FYI, If you buy this bag on the company website you will pay $100, but if you buy through Amazon you only pay $55 not including shipping.

I purchased this backpack in the hopes that it would fit my HP 17inch laptop. It does but it is very, very snug. I have to stretch the bag over the laptop, it does zipper just fine, but it definitely does not fit all 17 inch laptops comfortably.
