The Adventure 9 is a modern backpack designed for the SLR photographer with a pro digital or film SLR with a grip and 5 inch lens attached, several additional lenses, a flash, accessories and a laptop. The completely foam-padded lower compartment protects photo equipment, while the large top compartment holds a light jacket, lunch or other necessary items. Inside the top, a Pop-Off Pocket keeps AC adaptors and laptop cords organized. A separate, completely foam-padded compartment provides quick access to a laptop (such as Apple's PowerBook G4 or others up to 15½" x 11" x 2" in size) without disturbing photo gear. Double zipper pulls provide quick access to photo gear while a weather flap and quick-release buckle provide security and weather protection. Inside the main compartment, foam pillars support the camera with lens attached, ready for action, while adjustable, foam-padded dividers protect other equipment. Tamrac's patented Memory & Battery Management System uses red flags to identify available memory cards and batteries from ones that are used up. The comfortable, foam-padded backpack harness with sternum strap is contoured to distribute the weight of the camera gear across the shoulders.

 "Good Bag" 2009-08-21
By Gadget (Fort Worth)
I bought Tamrac Adventure 9 Photo/Computer Backpack for a trip to Europe where I needed to take my computer for work but also wanted to carry my camera equipment on board the plane instead of packing either in my check luggage. This bag did a great job of protecting my computer and camera and was easy and comfortable to carry around. The camera compartment was well padded and took my full size digital SLR along with two lenses with ease. Computer compartment was perfectly sized for my computer. The issue I found was there was not enough room in the accessory compartment to handle all my computer acessories and other things I wanted to ake on the plane with me. That compartment needs to be twice as large to be really useful. So I ended up using part of the camera compartment for computer accessories which limited the equipment I could carry. Also the computer compartment was difficult to get into quickly with two zippers and three straps to open.

 "Great camera backpack" 2009-06-17
By Brandon Hiller (Katy, TX)
I have had this bag now for 2 years and it is very rugged and comfortable. I have taken it all across the US and Mexico, and next week will take it to Europe for a week and a half. It is a great carry-on to fit all of my electronics in so I don't have to worry about checking them when I fly. I fit my D50 with the 18-200VR attached to it, an SB-600, camcorder, Nikon 50mm prime, Tokina 12-24mm, and several memory cards, cleaning products and filters in it with no problems. The zippered top half is great for storing cables, chargers and misc. items. When I leave my laptop at the hotel room I can pack my travel books and maps in the padded compartment for easy access.

The bag can get pretty heavy when fully loaded with gear but the padded straps allow you to wear it without discomfort. I would recommend this backpack to anyone who travels or needs a rugged bag to store their gear in. Next week I hope to finally try out the tabs on the bottom when I take my travel tripod with me.

"Tamrac adventure 9, never leave home without" 2009-05-11
By Donald
First off Tamarac makes great products I have several of them.

I don't gloat for the fun of it. But in Tamrac's case I will.

I bought a Aero Camera/laptop backpack and used it a lot. but it does not have a chest or waist strap, it was made for quick access.

When wearing my backpack and riding my motorcycle I turned to look over my shoulder to check traffic and the right strap slid off.

I was wearing a leather jacket so the lack of friction was a factor

This is no way is a bad reflection on Tamrac just me not doing my homework.

I ended up getting the Adventure 9 in camo, I think I fell in love with this bag from day one, I ride a motorcycle most of the time and the waist and chest straps keep it secured. I know my computer and camera gear are safe. My load is heavy mostly the large laptop I carry.

I work part time and go to College in the morning(Photography Major)

I also like the fact it does not scream camera bag.

and it has two water bottle pockets a big plus for those of us living in the desert.

 "Versatile, rugged, and comfortable" 2009-01-23
By Donald P. Johnson (Madison, Wisconsin)
This is an outstanding pack that holds my Nikon D80 Digital SLR and a host of accessories. It also features a slot for my laptop and a top pouch for extra gear (jacket, lunch, etc.) It is a decent size but rides well and is an excellent pack for air travel or for day hikes. The construction is quality with a water resistant finish. It repelled a major dousing from surf in Baja California with no discernable leaking. (It was not submerged, but blasted by waves on a fishing boat. A little marlin slime wiped off easily!) Gear does not shift inside the pack, another plus!!

"Perfect bag for a specific purpose." 2009-01-14
By Edwin Yoo
I love this bag because it serves 3 functions: carry my laptop and camera gear in a slim profile backpack with enough space to carry a few smaller non-photo items like a travel guide/snack while on traveling. I own 2 other camera bags: The Lowepro Naturetrekker which carries ALL of my camera equipment when I'm on a serious photo journey (2 slrs, 5lenses, large tripod, flash etc etc) and a Tamrac 5549 which carries enough equipment when I'm being a photo tourist around my home city. While there are compromises inherent in any hybrid multi-function bag, I think the strengths far outweigh the minor quirks.

Overall impression:

This bag holds my equipment I bring when I travel: 13" Macbook, Canon 50D, Tokina 12-24/4, 17-55/2.8 IS, 70-200/4L IS. The profile/width is quite slim which is great when walking in cramped areas where I use this bag (carry-on in airplanes, subways etc etc.) The bag is made of a thick/strong cordura nylon which is the same as any Tamrac bag. I really like the fact that this bag does _not_ scream out "I'm carrying photography equipment!) as I use this bag when traveling. I feel like photobags that are obviously photobags invite unwanted attention from thieves.

Harness System:

Keeping in mind that this bag is only meant to carry ~3 lenses, the harness system is good. The shoulder straps are well padded and slightly curved to be a bit more ergonomic than a straight strap. The straps are also reinforced with nylon straps which adjust the fit (and serve as a good attachment point for accessories) My only minor complaint is that the straps (and back surface) are covered with a durable nylon material which is not comfortable against bare skin. There is a small sternum strap and waist strap that keep the bag securely to your body when hiking or biking. The waist belt is not a padded but that's fine because this bag can't hold enough equipment to justify the added bulk of a padded hip belt. The top handle is very strong.

Laptop Compartment:

Very thick padding between you and your laptop. The zipper has a nice rubber/plastic coating which is supposed to make it water resistant. I have yet to actually be caught out in the rain with this bag. I also stash a thin book (travel guide and maps).

Camera Gear Compartment:

This bag is advertised to carry a mid or large SLR with a vertical grip. There have been some reviews complaining that it is too roomy for a small SLR (Canon Rebel) but I think this is unfair as Tamrac's product description clearly states what this bag was intended for.

The padding is thicker than than what you would find in Tamrac 5549 (shoulder bag) which I'm guessing reflects the intended use (a bit more active such as hiking/biking or traveling). It's approximately the same thickness as Lowepro bags. There is velcro on every wall surface so you can customize the compartments as much as you want.

I read one review that had a complaint about the main strap with quick release tabs covering the camera compartment which can get in your way when the flap is open. This is a bit unfair as this strap is so thick/robust in order to to bear the weight of all the equipment. This protects the zipper from being damaged. I guess they could have used a thinner nylon webbing or some kind of plastic buckle to allow the strap to stay out of your way. I'd rather have a robust strap that will never break.

The front flap has a clear section (hold thin/small items like a remote-release and filters) with mini- plastic pouches to hold batteries/CF cards. This is not as useful as the pouches in larger Tamrac bags (which can hold 50D battery charger.) You'd think items would fly out but if you use them as intended (CF cards and batteries) it's snug enough that they won't.

Upper compartment/Side Pockets:

The floor/partition between the upper compartment and photo equipment section is a semi-rigid lightly padded piece with velcro which allows you to adjust the amount of space. It is enough to carry a light sweater or lunch. Because of this modular design, the upper compartment is not fully sealed from the equipment portion and so you have to be careful about what you put in there. There is a tear-away plastic pouch to carry additional equipment located in the upper compartment. I use this to hold infrequently used items (my card reader and a firewire cable.)

The side pouches are big enough to carry a small 12oz water bottle and some snacks. It's just big enough to carry a Klean Kanteen 20oz bottle but is not big enough for a 32 oz Nalgene. (But everyone has gotten rid of those lexan bottles after the bisphenol scare, right?)

Summary:

I highly recommend this bag if you want to carry your SLR with a few lenses and a laptop with additional space for non-photo items like a light sweater. While I have bags that can carry vastly more equipment (big photo backpack) or quicker access (shoulder bag), this bag is perfect travel bag as a carry-on for the airplane and then to carry all of my gear when taking photos as a tourist at my destination.

I got this for my frequent work traveling with a PC. I try to be a minimalist while traveling and this bag is perfect.  "good, big, versatile protective pack" 2009-02-10
By frozebubba (Alaska)
I travel in and out of Alaska all year, usually to places that are warmer. I needed a computer backpack that was easy to hang a jacket on once I got to warmer places. I got the Mobile Edge Premium (MEBPP1) to replace my "perfect" computer backpack (Targus Sport Deluxe Laptop Backpack (TSB312-315))when the zippers failed after ~4 years of hard use and I found it was no longer available. This pack is bigger (will hold everything for an overnight business trip easily), as noted by other users, and it will actually hold a Lenovo T61 plus an ASUS Eee PC 1000HD in a protective sleeve and all the extra gear without being stuffed. Substantial impact proctection in the computer sleeve; thinner fabric than my old Targus. Outside gear pocket very nice; big zippers that occasionally hang in the fabric. If you want to stuff a jacket under the top flap, this is the only way to go as far as I have found.

 "Decent bag" 2009-01-06
By R. Hull (London, UK)
This bag is big. My new 17inch HP fits in it nicely as do about 5 or so normal sized library books and all the gear that goes with a laptop. A little on the pricey side (i picked mine up for $64 because there are others that will do the job for cheaper, but it's durable and seems to be put together in a quality way. Doesn't look like it's going to fall apart any time soon and it seems like a very secure way to carry my laptop around.

"Excellent protection for your SLR and Lap-top computer." 2009-04-26
By Alejandro Robledo Carranza (USA)
Quality is high, heavy-duty designed for and internals are very convenient to be arranged and adapted for camera, lenses, chargers, etc. In small planes it will not fit in the top compartment, I would no check-in this bag with my equipment inside.

It worth's to be used, many pockets, quite heavy but it is due to the great protection it offers; for my SLR (Nikon D80), lenses and lap-top it pays back, too much money to risk just, better to carry slightly heavy than loosing every thing because of using lighter bag.

"Absolutely love this absolutely awesome bag!!" 2009-02-16
By Rhonda Dodson (Illinois)
I bought this camera bag just over a year ago to hold my astrophotography equipment with equipment for piggyback as well as prime focus imaging. This amounts to ALOT of equipment & accessories. So far I have put the following in the bag: 2 cameras (Canon Digital Rebel 400D & Imaging Source DBK-21 video camera), 3 lenses, 3 power supplies, a multitude of telescope & camera adaptors, 2 barlows, telescope/camera piggyback adaptors, filters, a dew heater, right angle finder, memory cards, extra batteries, 2 battery chargers, manuals for all of this stuff, & what seems like a million camera & computer cables. I also carry 2 magnetic compasses, a red LED flashlight, cell phone w/ 2 chargers & a level as I travel to dark sky sites. It easily holds all of my things. Despite all of this stuff, I still have room for more, which is good since I just bought a full-frame astronomy ccd camera w/ a built in filter wheel, 2 large prime lenses, 2 power supplies, & 5 dew heaters!!

This bag has proven to be very durable. It has more than adequately handled the weight of my equipment, which is very heavy. None of my equipment has incurred any damage whatsoever.

As a matter of fact, I'm getting ready to buy another one of these camera bags as I have decided to separate my daytime photography equipment from my astrophotography equipment. I also purchased another Canon Digital Camera with 5 zoom lenses & other related accessories (memory cards, batteries, etc) for daytime wildlife/nature photography.

I plan on adding photos showing all the stuff I can pack into one of these bags when I get the chance.

I searched a long time before deciding on this product. It has tons of room and features. Being modular, you can fit any combination of lens and cameras. Plus, it holds a 15" laptop with room to spare. It is well padded and has a rain fly that hides away in the bottom of the pack. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a rugged and versatile camera backpack.

 "Very Nice Camera Pack" 2008-08-21
By J. Caudill (Hazard, KY)
I received this camera backpack as a gift. I had been begging for a new one for the longest time, something actually big enough to be useful on a good hike out to scenic areas.

It is a little big, and a little heavy, but will hold pretty much anything that you can think to put in it.

Nice features include a hidden rain cover that can be pulled out and put over the pack, it has good coverage, at least 3/4 or better. Has buckles at the chest and waist to help hold the weight. Plenty of room for extras like water bottles, cell phones, GPS units, etc. Good sturdy zippers that should last for years.

Problems I've encountered are with the waist buckle not holding, it just doesn't fit together tightly enough. Other plastic buckles seem like they could have the same problems if much weight was put through them. Also the way that the tripod straps hold the tripod, side to side across the bottom is a little troublesome. It is a little cumbersome getting the straps tightened, and since the tripod sticks out the sides, it can bump into and get caught on tree limbs, door jambs, and other things.

All in all it's a great pack, with plenty of room, and comfortable straps. I would buy it again.
