First this backpack can be bought at J&R or Dell computers for under $60.00, much less than the prices of the small or large STM Rogue and the price for the medium at most stores. Currently, I am using this backpack with a 13 inch macbook pro. The macbook pro is held in a waterfield sleeve/case inside of the backpack. I choose the medium STM Rogue(rather than the small) because I planned to use the backpack with a sleeve to protect my macbook pro. The fit of the macbook pro within the waterfield case within the STM Rogue is tight and keeps the laptop and sleeve from moving. Before purchasing this backpack, I did a bit of research to insure the waterfield sleeve/case for the macbook pro would fit within the medium STM Rogue.
Now the backpack. The STM Rogue is made of almost entirely of a denim material excluding the colored inserts. The denim is high quality and feels heavy duty. At the same time, the water resistant coating of the denim is noticeable to the touch. The red inserts are made of material similar to that used in lighter weight backpacks but is softer to the touch. The zippers and pulls both appear and feel strong, and all but a few of the smaller pockets use dual zippers. The straps of the backpack are adequately padded and very easy to adjust. The interior of the backpack is lined with fabric similar to but lighter weight than the red inserts on the outside of the backpack; while the laptop compartment is lined with a soft to the touch almost felt material. The laptop compartment is in the center of the backpack (front of the rear compartment) rather than closest to the wearer's back like most laptop backpacks. The compartment seems to have a fair amount of padding to protect a laptop, although using a sleeve in addition to the backpack may still be preferred. The laptop compartment is hidden behind a panel which uses Velcro to secure itself within the backpack. While this does accomplish the task, I have opened my backpack before to notice the panel loose from its Velcro. The rear compartment of the backpack is spacious and can be expanded using the straps on the sides to hold quite a few books, yet the height of the compartment seems excessive and unusable unless you stack items vertically. The front compartment (opposite the laptop storage area) is useful and has many smaller pockets within to hold pens, pencils, calculators, small books etc..., but the pockets for the pens and pencils could be slightly more slack to ease their use when removing and storing pens and pencils. Similar can be said for the pockets in the front compartment and the small outer pockets on the face of the backpack. These pockets could be so much more useful with slightly more depth to them. Nonetheless within the front compartment of the backpack, I have no trouble carrying a pen, pencil, mini stapler, graphing calculator, and a history textbook just slightly larger than a paperback novel. The backpack also includes a chest strap, waist strap, rain cover and both an interior and a exterior mp3/cell phone holder, but these items I have currently removed or stored within the backpack, as in the case of the waist straps and rain cover. Overall while the backpack has some flaws, the quality and durability of the backpack makeup for any deficiencies, and while most backpacks of this quality are nearly $100 or more, the STM Rogue medium can be bought for much less.
